USA Dance Northwest DanceSport Championships

The USA Dance Northwest DanceSport Championships 2013 were held at the Ainsworth Event Center in Portland, Oregon on October 12 and 13. Attending and competing were 6 couples from Hawai‘i. Glenn Okazaki with Anne Ho, Edwin and Charlotte Bugarin, Miguel Heraclio with Rieko Ota, Jackson Cho and Mei June Choong, Calvin and Debra Ota, and Michael and Lorrie Chun.

This event was a qualifying regional event for the USA Dance 2014 National DanceSport Championships that will be held March 28 – 30, 2014 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Results for the Hawai‘i couples are:

Amateur Senior II (45+ years) Championship Standard (WTVFQ) – 2 couples competing

Glenn Okazaki with Anne Ho placed 1st receiving all first places in all 5 dances from all 7 judges.

Calvin and Debra Ota took the 2^nd place.

Amateur Senior III (55+ years) Championship Standard (WTVFQ) – 3 couples competing

Again Glenn Okazaki with Anne Ho placed 1^st taking all the first places in all 5 dances from all 7 judges.

Calvin and Debra Ota again took the 2^nd place and Zoar and Cheryl Leggett from Arizona took 3^rd place.

Amateur Senior II (45+ years) Championship Latin (SCRPJ) – 2 couples competing

Edwin and Charlotte Bugarin took 1^st place by placing 1^st in all 5 dances

Calvin and Debra Ota took 2nd place although 2 judges out of 7 placed them 1^st in Samba.

Amateur Senior III (55+ years) Championship Latin (SCRPJ) – 2 couples competing

Edwin and Charlotte Bugarin took 1^st place again. This time taking all the 1^st places in all 5 dances from all 7 judges.

Calvin and Debra Ota took the 2^nd place.

Amateur Senior I (35+ years) Pre-Championship Standard (WTFQ) – 2 couples competing

1^st place, by taking 1^st in Waltz, Tango, Quickstep and 2^nd in Foxtrot Miguel Heraclio with Rieko Ota.

Placing 2^nd but winning the Foxtrot Vincent Chai with Karen Fedoruk from British Columbia.

Amateur Senior II (45+ years) Pre-Championship Standard (WTFQ) – 2 couples competing

Placing 1^st by winning all 4 dances Miguel Heraclio with Rieko Ota taking a total of 24 first place marks in all 4 four dances from 7 judges (a total of 28 first places)

Into 2^nd place but taking the remaining 4 first place marks Calvin and Debra Ota.

Amateur Senior I (35+ years) Novice Standard (WFQ) – 2 couples competing

1^st place Miguel Heraclio with Rieko Ota with firsts in all three dances

2^nd place Ted Rocha with Dorothy Tsang – California.

Amateur Senior II ( 45+ years) Novice Standard (WFQ) – 4 couples competing

1^st place Miguel Heraclio with Rieko Ota with firsts in all three dances

2^nd place Randy and Paulette Norman – Washington

3^rd place Ted Rocha with Dorothy Tsang – California

4^th place Terrance and Candace Nicholson – Oregon

Amateur Adult (19+ years) Silver Standard (WFQ) – 6 couples competing

1^st place Tomas Filler with Radka Pokorna – Oregon

2^nd place Nick van der Pauw with Renee Berard – British Columbia

3^rd place Jackson Cho with Mei June Choong they took 2^nd place in Foxtrot

Amateur Adult (19+ years) Gold Standard (WFQ) – 4 couples competing.

Jackson Cho with Mei June Choong placed in 4^th position but they took 3rd place in Foxtrot

Amateur Adult (19+ years) Silver Latin (SCR) – 2 couples competing

1^st place in all three dances Jackson Cho with Mei June Choong

2^nd place Nick van der Pauw with Renee Berard – British Columbia

Amateur Adult (19+ years) Gold Latin (SCRJ) 2 couples competing

1^st place in three dances and 2^nd in Rumba Jackson Cho with Mei June Choong

2^nd place Aaron Clark with Esther Beach – Washington.

Amateur Senior II (45+ years) Bronze Standard (WQ) – 7 couples competing

Out of the seven couples Michael and Lorrie Chun took 4^th place by placing 4^th in Waltz and 3^rd in Quickstep that tied them with Roger and Linda Blashfield – Oregon for the 3^rd overall place. Scrutineer Rule 11 in favor of the Blashfield’s broke the tie.

Amateur Senior III (55+ years) Bronze Standard (WQ) – 9 couples competing

Michael and Lorrie Chun danced in the 9-couple semi-final and made it through to the six couple final. They finished in 4^th position by placing 3^rd in Waltz and 4^th in Quickstep tying them again with the Blashfield’s! Rule 11 broke the tie in favor of the Blashfield’s.

Amateur Senior IV (65+ years) Silver Standard (WFQ) – 4 couples competing

Michael and Lorrie Chun finished in 3^rd position by placing 3^rd in Waltz, 2^nd in Foxtrot and 3^rd in Quickstep The Blashfield’s were 4^th by placing 4^th in all three dances!

Amateur Senior II (45+ years) Bronze Latin (CR) – 3 couples competing

Michael and Lorrie Chun placed 2^nd in both dances to take 2^nd place overall.

Amateur Senior III (55+ years) Bronze Latin (CR) – 5 couples competing

Michael and Lorrie Chun placed 2^nd in both dances to take 2^nd place overall.

Amateur Senior IV (65+ years) Silver Latin (SCR) – 2 couples competing

Michael and Lorrie Chun finished in 2^nd position placing 2^nd in all three dances.
