The Geoffrey Fells Perpetual Trophy given at the Yuletide Ball in Washington DC over the New Year weekend was awarded to the winner of the Open Amateur 5-dance Standard "A" Division (age 19+ years). The Trophy together with a $300 Scholarship (my donation) was won, for the second year, by Derek Walker and Jennifer Vestal. Although this couple were uncontested it was reported that "they danced beautifully and fully deserved the award". This Trophy has been in existence for the past 30 years.
Also at the same event Yuko Yamane, who was a resident in Hawai'i for a number of years, danced with her partner Thomas Yu from Ellicott City, MD and took 3rd place in the Open Amateur 5-dance Standard "B" division (age 35+ years). They competed against 4 other couples. Thomas and Yuko also took 3rd place in the "William Unkle Amateur Standard "B" Scholarship". They competed against 11 couples.
Thomas and Yuko competed at the 2009 Hawai'i Star Ball taking 2nd place.
